The Fossil Box Project Reaches 200 Boxes
In March 2026 the Fossil Box Project reached a remarkable milestone, delivering its 200th Fossil Box to a school in the UK. The first box was delivered to a Herefordshire primary school in December 2022 and as of 11 March 2026, 202 boxes have now reached schools and educational settings across the country.
Those 202 boxes have been distributed as follows:
144 to primary schools
23 to educational charities including museums
11 to secondary schools
10 to SEN schools
2 to specialist schools
2 to home schooling groups
With more scheduled for delivery, the project continues to grow.
What's next for the Fossil Box Project
Donated fossils continue to replenish stocks, ensuring the project remains sustainable. A network of volunteers is being built across the UK through the Pass the Parcel initiative to help with local deliveries - all boxes are hand delivered rather than posted, so volunteer drivers make a real difference. Further grant applications are planned to increase the number of free boxes available.
The project is also focused on improving accessibility and inclusivity, including working with a SEND school to develop additional materials using symbol supported text. A rock and fossil box tailored to secondary school syllabuses is on the future roadmap.
